Birth Around the World
To start off 2012 on the right foot, Gisele’s Blog features a new section that will be particularly pleasing to mothers, and all those interested in health and human development. Working to continually bring novelty to its readers, the Blog has launched an innovative section: Awakening Life, as a part of the project Birth Around the World.
The initiative was created by the midwife and neonatal nurse Mayra Calvetti and her husband, the businessman Enrico Ferrari. Since October 2011 they embarked on a special journey. Their goal is to visit 30 countries over nine months and learn about the different birthing methodologies used all over the world in an effort to help promote the humanization of birth. They started by traveling to Europe and have already been in countries where the public health system works and encourages natural childbirth like England, Netherland and Germany.
As the journey takes place, every two weeks the reality of each country will be posted here by Mayra with texts, pictures and videos. The dynamic duo will be filming; photographing, conducting one-on-one interviews, collecting data on births, health system, rates of maternal and neonatal mortality and sharing all they have learned with us.
Mayra was present at the birth of Gisele’s son, Benjamin. She is passionate about births and believes that the excessive use of technology and power may interfere adversely with the natural process of birth, increases risk and may even cause long-term complications for both mother and baby. According to the midwife, there are simple ways to improve maternal and newborn health with effective, cost-friendly, and compassionate care.

“When Mayra told me her idea about the Birth Around the World Project I thought it was a beautiful idea and knew that it would be really cool if she could share a little bit of this journey on my Blog. I had the opportunity to experience the natural process of birth and it was one of the most life changing experiences for me and very very special!
I believe it’s a woman’s right to make the decision about how she’s going to give birth to her child. And it’s also her right to have access to the information she needs so she can make that decision from a place of awareness, and not a place of fear.
I believe that sharing information and showing different ways of giving birth can help clear up some myths and misunderstandings about natural childbirth that for a long time was the only way of giving birth. I hope that I can learn even more about the subject through the experiences of these women around the world and be able to share this with you here on my blog.”

it is my belief that we need more education and more amazing faces to support and educate woman about their options when pregnant. i too had a home birth at the age of 37! it was the most amazing and empowering experience. i plan to have a second child and will not hesitate to have a home birth as well.
much respect for your courage and strength to not only have a home birth but to be an activist for women’s rights and a face for all the women who are unaware of the choice!

Minha pequena nasceu de uma parto humanizado, na minha casa, na minha caminha quase que nas mãos do meu marido… simplismente o melhor dia da minha vida. estou radiante em ver que você tbm esta levantando esta bandeira. pode ter certeza de que tem um grupo de mulheres poderosas e empoderadas junto contigo…. Tive o meu segundo filho a um ano e três meses atrás em um hospital particular em Tubarão-SC,quando cheguei ao hospital a primeira pergunta q me fizeram era pra quando minha cesarea estava marcada e eu repondi: “não marquei nada, meu primeiro filho nascaeu de parto normal e vou ter parto normal novamente”. As enfermeiras se olharam com cara de assustada e eu é quem comecei a ficar assim. Enfim, meu parto foi muito diferente do primeiro. O despreparo da equipe de enfermagem para parto normal era total e a médica trabalhou sozinha. Durante todo o parto me senti muito insegura.

Que incrivel coincidencia, eu pela primeira vez estou gravida e aos 4o anos, sou gaucha mas moro na ALemanha pq meu marido é alemao, e a semana passada quando soube que estava com 6 semanas eu fui na internet procurar saber como foi seu parto e todos os seus cuidados com tudo que envolveu sua gravidez. E agora veio essa materia maravilhosa no meu email fiquei emocionada e achando que tudo é pra ajudar a ter um bom parto , um bebe feliz e saudavel sem esquecer de cuidar de mim tbem! Eu gostaria muito de ter parto normal mas vamos ver como sera ate la e vi suas dicas de ioga e mentalizar q tudo vai ser bem.
Gostaria de saber se realmente vc nao sentiu dor , pq vc diz na entrevista q ficou 8 hs em trabalho de parto.

Wonderful! Thank you for backing such a great cause! I had a beautiful home birth almost one year ago and it changed my life! I think what is missing in childbirth (esp. in America) is education. If only women KNEW what these medical interventions did, they would want a better way!

Such a beautiful project! We need to raise people’s awareness about the importance of natural birth. I love the fact we have you Gisele, a world-recognisable face, promoting this. I currently live in Australia and society here embraces natural delivery. It is amazing to see how medical, nursing and allied health teams at hospitals help women become empowered and believe they are more than capable of having a baby the natural way. C-sections are important – they can save lives – but they should not be a common place procedure. It would be great if you could also talk about the ‘Casas de Parto’ projects we have in Brazil, they also do a fantastic job. Society needs to fully embrace this idea and understand it is healthier for mum and babies. Cheers from Australia!

Adorei a idéia, parabéns pela iniciativa… aqui no Brasil as mulheres estão realmente precisando muito se reencontrarem. Taxa de 90% de parto cesárea no sistema particular de saúde mostra que tem alguma coisa muito errada ai.
