The return of the bikes
Recently, concepts such as sustainability, green economy and environmental responsibility, has caused a behavior change around the world.
A big change that helps to preserve the environment is choosing bikes instead of cars. Besides being a healthier option, it’s also more economical.
Earlier this century, they were use for transportation, being part of the large cities. In the 50’s, with the increase number of cars, they were relegated for children and low-income people. Riding in the streets started to be dangerous and unfashionable.
Years later, the number of cars on the streets rose and traffic congestion has become a routine in big cities. It’s time to change!
Many governments have invested in strong campaigns to promote a behavior change in society. But, in addition to overthrow the prejudice, it’s necessary to provide conditions for this change. Berlin is an inspiring example for cities seeking this new way of transport.
There are 720 bicycles and only 320 cars for every thousand inhabitants. Berlin spends more than five million in maintenance and safety in more than a thousand kilometers of bicycle paths that cross the city. The bicycle became a trend. An example to big centers which are suffering with the increase in the number of vehicles on the streets.
The bike is certainly a healthier transportation, environmentally friendly, and, why not, charming, which helps the city to be cleaner, less noisy and with less traffic jams.

Como a Fernandadisse, aqui realmente é um meio de transporte( estou em Koeln), vamos para todo e qualquer lugar de bicicleta, carrego meus 2 filhos no carrinho, não existe um rua sem ciclovia. E temos a preferencia depois dos pedestres, então todo mundo respeita, podemos usar onibus e metro coma s bicicletas. è maravilhoso pq ganha tempo, não precisa procurar vagas para estacionar …
Eu adoro andar de bicicleta, mas ainda é muito difícil usar ela para ir ao trabalho. A falta de respeito pelos motoristas assusta…
Aqui na Alemanha, a bicicleta é realmente um meio de transporte muito utilizado, entre os usuarios que vão desde crianças à idosos. Para passeio, ir ao trabalho, fazer compras, sair à noite, entre outros. E o governo investe nelas, um exemplo são as “Radweg”, que são as pistas para bicicletas. Através delas, podemos circular pela cidade e até mesmo chegar em outras próximas. E quando não há mais delas, o ciclista circula pelas ruas juntamente com os carros, respeita os mesmos sinais de trânsito que estes, porém é também respeitado e observado pelos motoristas. Isto é um grande facilitador para circular com elas pelas ruas. Acredito que no Brasil, seria necessário primeiramente uma mudança de comportamento e educação no trânsito, para o uso da bicicleta como meio de transporte.
Nossa, enquanto no Brasil é uma luta para construírem e manterem as ciclovias, em Berlim é essa maravilha toda! Os nossos governantes precisam começar a entender que há uma mudança de atitude em andamento e que isso vai acontecer, eles querendo ou não. As pessoas estão ficando mais conscientes e, aos poucos, vão adotar um estilo de vida mais sustentável, que inclui, é claro, a bicicleta. Mostrar que este hábito é comum em várias cidades do mundo é uma ótima dica para ajudar no discurso dos bicicleteiros do Brasil.
I bought myself a bike a few months ago – it’s been scary riding it around Liverpool city, but it’s so freeing and energising. I wish more people would cycle, it would be so much safer!
