What can we do for a better world?

We always hear that if everyone did their part it would be enough. But in practice, what does this means?

In a time when we’re increasingly individualistic and living a very busy life, it’s hard to think about the social problems affecting the world such as hunger, poverty, conflicts and civil wars that kill thousands every day.

There are people who work daily to help others in humanitarian organizations. They are groups of volunteers who come together to rescue people in areas affected by harms like natural disasters or epidemics.

There are several humanitarian organizations that operate around the world. One of them is the ‘Doctors Without Borders’, established in 1971 in France. Today, it has more than 28.000 professionals from different areas in over 60 countries and operates daily in situations of natural disasters, hunger, conflicts, combating epidemics and neglected diseases.

Another organization, perhaps one of the more known, is the ‘International Committee of the Red Cross’. Founded in 1863, currently has about 12.000 employees spread across 80 countries and works to bring humanitarian assistance to people affected by conflicts and armed violence, promoting laws that protect victims of war.

But you don’t need to be a member of a big organization to be a change agent. You can do this on your street, neighborhood, region, city, you just need to help someone who is really in need.

Therefore, to remember that on the next Sunday (19) will be celebrated the World Humanitarian Day, the UN is inviting each of us to leave our mark on the world, through the campaign “I was here”, with the special participation of Beyoncé, who donated the music video to be released internationally on this date.
