Década das Nações Unidas para os Desertos e a Luta Contra a Desertificação

Você sabia que uma em cada três pessoas no mundo mora em áreas de desertificação? Esse é um dos dados apresentados pela ONU, que justifica a escolha dessas áreas como foco de conscientização na próxima década. Através de uma ação de lançamento, que ocorrerá simultaneamente no Brasil e na África, a organização anunciará, no dia 16 de agosto de 2010, a Década das Nações Unidas para os Desertos e Luta Contra a Desertificação (UNDDD, na sigla em inglês).

No Brasil, o lançamento será realizado em Fortaleza/Ceará (região onde prevalecem terras secas), junto com a abertura da Segunda Conferência Internacional: Clima, Sustentabilidade e Desenvolvimento em regiões Semi-Áridas (ICID 2010). Além do evento principal, serão organizados lançamentos regionais de setembro a novembro deste ano. Na África, o PNUMA, em parceria com o PNUD, vai promover uma coletiva de imprensa durante lançamento simultâneo em Nairóbi.

A década de eventos será promovida pelo secretariado da Convenção das Nações Unidas de Combate à Desertificação (UNCCD), em colaboração com o Departamento de Informação Pública (DPI) da sede da ONU em Nova Iorque; o Programa das Nações Unidas para o Meio Ambiente (PNUMA); o Programa das Nações Unidas para o Desenvolvimento (PNUD); e o Fundo Internacional de Desenvolvimento Agrícola (IFAD), além de outros órgãos da ONU.

United Nations Decade for deserts and the fight against desertification

Do you know that one in three people around the world live in areas of desertification? These data presented by the UN justifies the choice of these areas as the focus for raising awareness in the next decade. On August 16, 2010, the organization will announce the United Nations Decade for deserts and the fight against desertification (UNDDD) by means of a launch action which will occur simultaneously in Brazil and Africa.

In Brazil, the launch will take place in Fortaleza, Ceará (a region where dryland soil prevails) along with the opening of Second International Conference: Climate, Sustainability and Development in Semi-Arid Regions (ICID 2010). Besides the main event regional launches will be organized from September to November this year. In Africa, UNEP in partnership with UNPD will promote a press conference simultaneously with the launch in Nairobi.

The decade of the events will be promoted by the secretariat of the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) in collaboration with the Department of Public Information (DPI) at UN headquarters in New York, the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), and other UN bodies.
