On this Saturday, March 31, Gisele and the Übersite Team invite you to participate in the Earth Hour 2012, a campaign that occurs every year to draw attention to the most urgent problems in the world.
On the last Saturday of March, the world unites in a mobilization and pledge to turn off the lights for an hour. According to WWF-Brazil, the idea of the event started off in 2004, when “after encountering very serious scientific data, WWF-Australia begins to examine new ways of addressing the issue of climate change and put them in the center of discussions”. The organization then, started to encourage the residents in Sydney to demonstrate their support in taking action, by participating in the first Earth Hour, in 2006.
The following year, 2.2 million people and more than 2 thousand companies turned off their lights for an hour. The movement was so successful, that after two years of its inaugural version, more than 35 countries and almost 400 cities have taken part in the event.
In 2012, a challenge was launched. With the slogan Earth Hour: 60+, the campaign encourages the participants to go beyond the hour and continue to take sustainable actions for the planet. The idea is to do amazing and kind of bizarre things daring other people to accept a challenge. “I Will if You Will” is a fun and easy way to participate!
There are all kinds of challenges: the executive director of Greenpeace International, Kumi Naidoo, promised to dye his beard green if 10 000 people commit to support Earth Hour; the pianist and composer Christian Calcatelli, will play the piano live on the web for eight hours straight if five thousand people commit to recycle paper throughout the year; presenters Bill and Giuliana will attend a red carpet event wearing Chicago Bears jerseys if five thousand people participate in Earth Hour; Oliver Kurr won’t speak for two weeks if 10,000 people accept the challenge of not using their cars for a week. According to the WWF website “with the power of social network supporting Earth Hour message, we hope to attract an even larger participation so we can build a truly global community, committed to create a greener planet”.
Gisele and the Übersite are already participating and helping to spread the Earth Hour message. Check it out!
What are you waiting to become a part of it? On March 31, take a stand, spread the campaign and help improve our planet’s condition. It’s time to take action and think about the future. Before it’s too late!
