Sustainable Olympics

In a few days the Olympic games of London will start and the city is finalizing arrangements to receive thousands of people from all over the world. And to make this Olympics the most sustainable, stadiums and transportation have gained special attention in order to decrease the damage to the environment without losing efficiency.

DivulgaçãoThe public transportation is the sector with the biggest changes. The main international airport, Heathrow, created a system of electric cars called “Ultra”, which take passengers to the parking lot, decreasing pollution and waiting time. The traditional red buses were adapted to pollute less, also received a modern design and improved accessibility for users with mobility problems.  New ecological taxis, powered by electricity, began to circulate in the streets.

To encourage people to leave the car at home and opt for alternative transport, avoiding traffic and decreasing the release of CO2, the city plans to reward who make this choice.

Recyclable arenas were created to avoid problems with the big buildings after the games. It will reduce the costs and the impact to the environment. At the end of the event, the structure can be dismantled and reused in other places across the country.

Another concern of the City of London is the waste that will be generated during the games. Besides the organized scheme of picking up the garbage, another bet is in biodegradable food packaging.

The air quality also appears in the list of improvements promoted by the games. A chemical solution that attracts dust particles and stuck them on the pavement is being spread through the streets. Once bonded on the pavement, the particles are collected by the movement of the car tires or washed away by the rain.

Isn’t that a good example for the future host cities?

In Lanzarote, Canary Islands, is now the first “fotolinera”, the name of a place where electric cars can charge in 1 minutes their batteries. The name “fotolinera” is like the oil one “gasolinera”. Nice step forward.
    It is in Lanzarote island.

  2. all that moves makes E says:

I am thinking about electric cars with batteries, and some “ventilators” in the front down part of the car, under lights, that moves because of the wind made by the car running. Those could capture some energy to the battery, the same than from the wheels. Imagine a car than could recharge battery while driving it. And solar capturer complements too. Human can improve the energy world.
