One degree less for the good of the planet

Years have gone by since there was a burst of information on global warming. Needless to say, the environment has been suffering the everyday consequences since then, hasn’t it? The world has been suffering more and more as well.  Floods that destroyed the city of Rio de Janeiro in Brazil, the threat of another tsunami in Hawaii, and many other tragic events that took so many lives are examples of the worsening global warming.

Thinking about it, Brazil Green Building Council (GBC), a company that aims at sustainability, has created a way to decrease the concentration of heat in buildings and homes, reducing the albedo, which is responsible for reflecting the sunlight. It is possible if roof tiles and roofs are white, which do not absorb the sunlight. Therefore, if a large number of houses and buildings take this measure, the temperature in the world can be reduced by, at least, one degree, thus helping a lot to fight against global warming.

There are many campaigns in which different celebrities have supported GBC’s action, trying to make the population adhere to the project to reduce the heat absorption. Of course, this is just one of the measures we must take to help reduce the global warming. Many other actions should be carried out so that we can free ourselves from this terrible consequence that we are reaping now.

Reduction in excessive use of water, stop-deforestation campaigns, increased use of bicycles as a means of transportation to reduce the emission of gases harmful to the environment are also on the list of other measures.

That is, there’s still a lot to do to save our planet. Motivation and willpower is what we have because we will be able to reverse this situation for sure!

Join the campaign too; we need to increase the number of people adhering to the proposal. Let’s make a difference on the planet!

  1. Thank you very much for the article.

Green Building Council Brasil s’ objective is to transform the way we build our city from wasting 30 – 40% of the natural resources . By 2020, 65% of the world population will be living in the city and without sustainable urban development it would be impossible.

Our major activity is in education, partnering with all the major universities in Brazil acting in 28 cities all over Brazil . What we try is to do is to teach ” HOW ” to the build industry so as to building a sustainable future for all.

In less than 3 years, our Non Profit organization had taught and trained over 15,000 professionals .

We taught how to design and build a cleaner /greener city but with better healthier buildings, remove toxic chemicals in our construction materials, reduce waste, reduce the use of energy by 40%, use natural design to bring sunlight and more comfort for instance.

It had been proven for example, that children can do better in MATH and improve their score
by 15 -20 % if the class room has natural light.

We are succeeding, despite much resistance to see the transformation in Brazil.

“One Degree Less – White roofs for 100 cities Initiatives ” is only one of the campaign to get people involved.

We started a campaign to help people who are fed up of hearing about climate change and want to DO SOMETHING with HIGH IMPACT.
The researched was done by a Noble Prize winner Dr. Hakbari , our partner at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. There is nothing as effective today that is easy to do as to paint the roofs and surfaces white. Our project is supported by many scientists, US Senators and President Obamas’ Energy Secretary Steven Chu.

Each 100sqm painted white = removal of 10 cars of the street.! We can all help.

We asked celebrities such as Costanza Pascolato, Brad Pitt, Christiane Torloni, Joao Doria Jr , Torben Grael, Toni Garrido, etc. to help with our campaign.

We continue to look for support from more celebrities who care enough to use their images to help bring this simple yet effective solution to help slow down the heating of the sea and the cities and RESERVE the MAN MADE Global warming. We did it with the Ozone hole problem in the 1990s before so I believe we can do it with Global Warming.

We are grateful for all their help and we continue to book them with Mauricio Nahas who generously donate his time to take the pictures.
